Prospective Students

I have never taught a class before, I am stiff as a board and I don't have the same body type as the people on the DVD! Could I still take the training?
Yes, Essentrics is for everybody.  We encourage and welcome people of all fitness levels and experience, regardless of age and ability. You will notice a huge change in your own flexibility and body-shape as you go through the training program. Teaching your first pre-choreographed workout, your own body will become more flexible, fluid and balanced and you will start to look more like the people on the DVD’s.  Everyone benefits from this program, even our teachers!

This looks somewhat like dance; do I need to have a background in dance?
Not at all!  Some of our best teachers do not have any dance training and have excelled in teaching Essentrics. Backgrounds of our current teachers include: no fitness training, massage therapist, athletic therapist, yoga/pilates/fitness instructors, former dancers, school teachers, financial specialists, former athletes and many more.

What if I have an injury, am pregnant, or have any special conditions?
Provided that your doctor has cleared you to participate, you can still do the training with a few modifications that we will show you. Your special condition will make you a more empathetic instructor.

Can I become fully certified by distance education?
Yes! Most people take only the distance learning certification program and never attend a live teacher training. Our distance program offers extensive support tools and an interactive group webpage to help you succeed and become a confident and knowledgeable instructor.  Most people are fully certified from a distance however we highly recommend attending a live teacher training, as it will help improve your skills as a teacher.

What are the benefits of attending live teacher training?
The hands-on experience is invaluable. Live teacher trainings offer personalized corrections and instruction that cannot be replicated in a distance-training program. The experience you gain within a group, allows you to learn from your fellow peers.  You will work with various body types and will learn how to modify and adjust the exercises according to student’s needs.  There is no substitute for the knowledge that you will attain about yourself and others in a live workshop.

Is there a time limit to complete the certification?
While there is no time limit, we do provide a guideline for completion of each level.   We recommend that you follow the time management guide that we provide to ensure that you complete the levels in a timely manner. Level 1 should take approximately 12 weeks, and Level 2 to 4 should take 6 weeks each. Each level, from 1 to 4, will require that you submit a written as well as practical exam, and between 18-30 hours of apprentice work.  We provide you with time management tools to stay on top of the learning process, but you may go at your own pace! In the time management plan it is suggested that you put aside about 1 ½ hrs a day five days a week. That should be sufficient to complete the program.

Can I teach before I complete Level 4?
Yes, absolutely!  You may begin teaching as a Certified Level 1 Instructor.  You will be qualified to teach the Pre-Choreographed Workout 1 as your first routine.  As a Level 1 Instructor you should change routines every 8 to 12 weeks in order to give variety to your students. Students get bored with the same music and routine if it goes on for more than 12 weeks!   You are obliged to teach Pre-Cho Workouts until you pass level 4, where you learn how to put your own workout together.

Are payment plans available?
Please contact training@essentrics.com to help create a payment plan that suits your individual needs.  Though course fees are usually due in full two weeks before the start of a training course, we are always willing discuss options to help you get started!

Can I take the live teacher trainings for personal interest, even if I don’t plan on teaching?
Yes, those looking to enhance their understanding of the Esmonde Technique may participate in a live teacher training at a discounted rate. Many people take the workshops for personal interest.

Do I need any prior certification to become an Essentrics Instructor?
No, you do not need any prior certification.  We suggest that instructors take anatomy and physiology courses as that will help them excel as instructors. However, it is not necessary.

Are there any age requirements to teach Essentrics?
We would like instructors to be of legal age, as you will need to be insured by your local fitness insurance company. Every country has different insurance rules. You must abide by your local laws and they will most likely include age limits.

What happens if I do not pass my exam?
In the case that you do not receive the minimum passing grade of 80% you will be able to resubmit your exam (the written or practical portion). You will be assigned an exam corrector who will provide you with the additional support needed to help you succeed. You will be eligible to resubmit your exam after a period of 30 days. A re-evaluation fee of $60 will apply.

Current Students

I don’t have access to a studio or any clients to film my video exam!
Some teachers have filmed in a living room, in a community center and even outdoors.  Our focus is on your teaching skills, not the space!

Why do I need to follow Pre-Choreographed Routines?
Essentrics is a full-body strengthening and stretching program.  Until you have completed Level 4 you will not know the full program and will be incapable of putting a safe and efficient routine together. Each Pre-Cho has been created with a specific flow and logic to ensure the results of a strong, flexible and slenderized body.  It is only until you have completed Level 4 that you will have the knowledge to create your own routines.  We created the Pre-Cho Routines with your best interest in mind to help you succeed, achieve your desired results, without injury and pain free.

My first language is not English; can I teach my practical exam in my own language?
Yes, we currently accept practical exams in English, French, and German & Dutch

My homework answers seem to be repetitive, is this right?
Yes the answers are often the same.  Just answer what you think is correct and don’t worry if they are very repetitive.

How do I find students for my apprentice classes?
If you have never taught before ask a family member, close neighbor or friend to be your apprentice student.  Have them sign your forms after the class. Don’t cheat as the more classes you have taught will reflect in your exam. We can tell! You will probably have trouble in your first 15 classes but after that you will get quite good rapidly.  So find a willing person to be your student. Or have lots of different people.  It does not have to be the same person.

What can I do when I have questions about exercises or want to practice with a more experienced teacher?
Look to see if there is a master trainer in your area.  If not email the ESSENTRICS office at training@essentrics.com and someone will answer your questions.

How often do new Pre-Choreographed Workouts come out?
We aim to release a new Pre-Cho every 3 months.

How long do you teach the same Pre-Choreographed Workout?
Between 8 to 12 weeks

Where / how do I find suitable songs for my workouts?
Each Pre-Cho workout has a suggested music list found in your Pre-Cho manuals.  If the songs are not available on ITunes, try to find a song with a similar feeling and rhythm.  On the teacher training Facebook page instructors share their favorite songs. That is also very helpful.

What can I call my class when teaching my apprentice hours?
Essentrics Apprentice Class

Do I have to be certified to call my class Essentrics?
Once you are Level 1 certified, you may call your class Essentrics. Before then, you are qualified to teach an Essentrics Apprentice Class.

Where can I teach once I’m certified?
The sky’s the limit!  Our teachers have found employment in a variety of settings with diverse focuses, ranging from group fitness settings and community centers, to seniors groups, athletic conditioning and therapeutic rehabilitation.  Essentrics can be taught in gyms, physiotherapy clinics and elementary schools to hockey camps, professional and non-professional dance schools and sports federations.  You will find a path that is right for you!

What happens after I am certified Essentrics?  Are there requirements to maintain certification?
Instructors will be obliged to participate in continuing education, on an annual basis. In order to do so we have given you the following three options:

  • Purchase a minimum of 2 pre-choreographed workout a year
  • Submit a DVD teaching a one hour workout ($40 marking fee)
  • Attend a live teacher training

If you do not maintain your certification your name will be removed from our web site as an ESSENTRICS instructor.
